Abstract
Researchers have found that gender-role assignment, formerly thought to be accomplished early in life and permanently affixed, is less durable and immutable than previous supposed. Data collected regarding indigenous sexual behavior in both male and female correctional institutions present a fluid notion of gender roles as more dependent on environmental factors, an inmate's incorporation into the institutional culture, and intrinsically associated with survival strategies and negotiated orders.
