Abstract
The incorporation of well-developed recreation and leisure programs into community support is a vital ingredient for a fully integrated and meaningful life for persons with disabilities residing in community settings. A study was conducted in the State of Illinois to investigate the provision of recreation and leisure services to persons with developmental disabilities residing in community residential alternatives (CRAs). Results of the study revealed recreation and leisure experiences were a part of the everyday lives of residents. The CRAs relied primarily on staff and residents for the provision of these services. Funding for leisure pursuits was limited and respondents perceived a need for the improvement and/or expansion of recreation/leisure services. Additional results are presented and discussed along with recommendations for meeting the recreation and leisure needs of individuals with developmental disabilities living in the community.
