Abstract
A nationwide study to determine the state classification and certification requirements for teachers of persons who are mentally retarded was conducted. Responses from both State Department Certification Officers and State Directors of Special Education were analyzed. Some discrepancies between responses from the state officials were noted. Although categorical certification is still the most prevalent approach noncate-gorical certification is slowly gaining in acceptance by the states for individuals with mild and moderate mental retardation. Specific recommendations emphasizing collaboration and communication between the states, teacher training institutions and professional societies are included.
