Abstract
The recent emphasis on community-based instruction for students with moderate/severe handicaps has presented special education administrators with new challenges and demands. Administrators are an important member of the instructional team. Their leadership and support are critical to the success of community-based programs. Five potential problem areas in which proactive administrative efforts are particularly needed are discussed: 1) providing leadership to staff and parents; 2) staff allocation and teaming; 3) scheduling for community involvement; 4) liability; and 5) budgeting. Within each area, specific administrative actions are suggested.
