Abstract
In a 1988 study, only three of New Zealand's largest private sector organisations reported that they had career development systems in place (Elkin 1989). Almost 10 years later a new study has found that all 16 out of the 20 organisations that responded to the research reported involvement in the career development of their employees. This paper reports on the methods these organisations use to guide, explore and develop the careers of their employees, and notes with concern the general lack of organisational involvement in the career development of their part-time and casual employees.
