Abstract
As we are all aware, our society is undergoing substantial eco nomic and social changes. Arising out of these changes are social problems such as lack of job opportunities and a high level of unemployment. Con tributing to these problems has been the recent world reces sion. But even after an eco nomic recovery we will only have partly solved our prob lems. There are forces of a more structural and long-term nature which need to be con sidered if we are to understand the economic and social changes affecting society. These forces are difficult to identify but they relate to new technology and technological change.
