Abstract
In this paper I will discuss three broad areas in which shiftwork has effects within industry and commerce, and to consider logical points of intervention. The three areas where the effects of shiftwork are of concern are biological, social and organisational. As I go over them I will try to bring out some of the points where the literature and the research in this field suggest that practicable change could be considered. I am not going to argue that one can totally overcome the effects of shiftwork. It is not a case that one can sustain. However, I do believe that some of the negative effects can be reduced. One can make it more possible for shift-workers to cope. But while the situation can be somewhat improved the problems of shiftwork are inherent in the nature of having work run over 24 hours.
