Abstract
In 1975, the publisher of The Managerial Grid (1964) mentioned to Jane and me that sales were approaching the
million mark. This milestone caused us to take stock and to review the research and field experience that had
accumulatedfrom individual development programmes and OD projects over the years. Furthermore, since changes
had taken place in society which affect managerial styles, we also wanted to review our own conclusions, as
