Abstract

Far from the frenzied noise and hectic urban streetscapes is a tranquil, rural idyll brought to life by artist Clare Brodie in Radiance 5, the artwork which is featured on the cover of this issue of the Alternative Law Journal.
It’s an autumn landscape, or twilight perhaps, that has been pared back to its elemental foundations. Fields of mysterious crops, rich red soil, low dusky ranges and trees whose leaves are changing colours with the season.
There’s a serenity in the silence evoked in Brodie’s artwork – a stillness in the soothing shapes. The tonal contrasts create what the artist describes as a ‘subtle optical bounce’, where the composition draws together to provide a ‘cohesive visual experience’.
As Brodie explains, she ‘fuses her emotional internal landscape with nature, deciphering complexities into deceptively simple compositions with a uniform finish that belies all effort and process’. At their heart, she notes, her ‘paintings have a calming beauty with quiet strength’.
Clare Brodie has held solo exhibitions in the three state capitals along the east coast of Australia and in Auckland, New Zealand/Aotearoa. Her work has also been shown at fairs including the Aotearoa Art Fair and Spring1883, and been shortlisted for art prizes including the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award and the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize. Collectors of her work extend beyond Australasia, to the UK and South East Asia.
