Collins, above, ref 7, p.68. The definitions of ‘death in police custody’ were determined at the Australasian Police Ministers' Council, 1994. There are two categories of death in police custody. Category 1 involves a) a death in an institutional setting (eg police station) and b) deaths resulting from ‘close contact’ operations (eg raids). Category 2 involves death resulting from a police operation where the police did not have close contact. Police pursuits come under Category 2, see CollinsLisa (2002), above, ref 7, p.11.
