Abstract
This article explores the portrait of the scribe presented in the Book of Ben Sira in an attempt to draw some conclusions about the dimensions of the scribal role in second century BCE Israel. The scribe's education fits him for a range of positions of power and authority in the public life of his community, particularly in the judiciary.
