A Call to Contemplation: Peace Politics and the Church

Abstract

Church action for nuclear disarmament must be seen in the context of thought about the deeper currents formative of modern life, thought about the situation of Christianity in a world at once increasingly given over to technical rationality and increasingly shaken by confusions and crises. In the end it is suggested that there are two levels to the Church's involvement in peace politics: first, the more immediate level of action on such issues as nuclear disarmament and, secondly, a more radical level of response to fundamental issues raised by modernity. This radical response includes the call to form a contemplative community of worship.
