Abstract
Understanding how to communicate with individuals in other countries, particularly in a business environment, has become increasingly important in our global economy. This paper presents an effort by professors at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, and Sofa University in Sofia, Bulgaria, to engage students in a course project through the Internet, linking both countries and their universities. Using the Internet, the students worked in teams to prepare a study on the feasibility of starting a business in Bulgaria. The course required frequent communication and exchange of information between the teams through a web site created specifically for the course. The motivation for the project was to bring to life the cross-cultural scenarios typically read about in textbooks, but seldom experienced, and to apply and integrate business disciplines such as marketing and finance to a real-world situation. Our paper will describe the project, its successes, and its pitfalls with suggestions for how to overcome the latter.
