Introduction: Emerging experiences of work in a changing economy

Abstract

The purpose of this introductory article is to lead in to the main articles on the subject of changing experiences of work. It initially discusses some of the main concepts that have structured the debate in recent years, and then presents the framework of the issue. In contrast with the previous ‘industrial’ conception of work, which was a rather homogeneous experience for most workers, the current experience of work is characterised by the diversity among workers along three main axes: time, space and contractual regulation. It is along these three dimensions that the subsequent articles are structured. The article concludes with a summary of the main findings of these articles.

L'objectif de cet article préliminaire est d'introduire les articles principaux traitant des expériences de travail en constante évolution. Il met tout d'abord en avant certains des principaux concepts qui ont structuré la discussion ces dernières années, et présente par la suite la structure de ce thème. Contrairement à l'ancienne conception «industrielle» du travail, qui constituait une expérience plutôt homogène pour la plupart des travailleurs, l'expérience actuelle du travail se caractérise par la diversité parmi les travailleurs suivant trois axes principaux: le temps, l'espace et la réglementation contractuelle. C'est en fonction de ces trois dimensions que les articles ci-après sont structurés. En guise de conclusion, l'article présente un résumé des résultats principaux de ces articles.

Dieser einführende Beitrag dient als Einleitung für die Hauptbeiträge, die sich mit dem Thema Arbeitserfahrung im Wandel befassen. Er erörtert zunächst einige der Hauptkonzepte, die die Diskussion der letzten Jahre bestimmt haben, und zeigt dann, wie dieses Thema strukturiert ist. Anders als bei dem ‘industriellen’ Arbeitskonzept der Vergangenheit, das fur die meisten Arbeitskräfte eine ziemlich homogene Erfahrung beinhaltete, ist die Art und Weise, wie Arbeit heute erfahren wird, durch die Diversität unter den Arbeitskräften in dreierlei Hinsicht geprägt: Zeit, Raum und vertragliche Regelung. Die nachfolgenden Beiträge befassen sich mit diesen drei Dimensionen. Zum Schluß dieses einleitenden Artikels werden die wesentlichen Ergebnisse dieser Beiträge zusammengefasst.
