This paper reviews studies of football fans that were carried out in England, Scotland, Spain, France, Belgium and Austria. The object of these studies was to discover details about the age, sex, occupations and ethnic backgrounds of fans. The data indicated that the fans were predominantly young and male, but that the game's appeal was not limited to particular occupational groups. No clear pattern could be identified according to ethnicity.
