Abstract
At the 11th Nigerian University Games in 1986, 173 athletes from 12 of the 24 Nigerian universities were interviewed to determine their goals for participation in sports. This investigation discovered that out of three goal-subsets, the athletes rated the athletic performance goal subset as least important for participation in sports. It was recommended that coaches and sports administrators always monitor the goals of their athletes, as the pattern of the athletes' goals may also influence their athletic behaviour in terms of level of performance and serious attitude to athletics.
