Abstract
Full scale study of sport sociology in Japan developed rapidly from the time that the Special Research Division was formed within the Japanese Society of Physical Education. On important characteristic of the study of sport sociology in Japan is that sports research was undertaken from the viewpoint of physical education. Another is that, whether the researchers themselves are aware of it or not, social science research in Japan has in the past shown influences of historical materialism. This trend, however, is now changing.
