Abstract
In this survey the author links the social science research on sports with the historical development of sports in Finland and with society at large. Apart from the basic task of discerning truths and facts based on the empirical reality of sports, social science research also has a critical and evaluative role in exploring problematic or neglected issues in physical culture. Is also challenges traditional wisdom in the mainstreams of sports, and contributes to a new policy and the planning of sports for man in society.
