Abstract

Politicians and sociologists have endeavoured to ascertain the role of ethnic sport in view of the assimilation and integration of ethnic minorities. Data gathered from an inquiry of Turkish migrants in the Federal Republic of Germany are presented as a test of hypotheses regarding conditions for and effects of the participation in ethnic sport. It was found that participation in ethnic sport did not influence individual essimilation and personal integration. The study shows that, to a certain degree, acceptance of the traditional sport- specific norms was connected with participation in ethnic sport. All in all, the results of this study do not prove that ethnic sport can be regarded as an "asylum" for underprivileged members of an ethnic minority.
