Abstract
In this article, attention is focussed upon the relationships between indivi dual sports and the wider social structure. In particular, attention is drawn to the significant dimensions of social composition in sports, processes through which social composition may change, and relationships between changes in social com position and changes in the symbolic systems, beliefs and practices of individual sport. These issues are approached through a critical examination of recent con tributions to the Sociology of Sport.
