Abstract
As it happens with most of the so called amateur sports, top track athletes are very sensitive to problems which appear when they train hard in order to improve their atheletical performances - at the elite level — while keeping a nor mal development in their professional occupations — work or study. In order to study the problems related to the duality amateurism was more dedication to athletic activities, in the sphere of track and field in Spain, it was conducted a mail survey among 380 Spanish top male athletes. The percentage of answers has been very high, more than 70% of returned questionnaires. A multivariate analysis of the main results has been made using as control variables age, years in the sport, occupation, social class, order in the ranking, etc. In addition to the identification of the main problems related both to the occupational and spor tive activities of the surveyed atheltes, is determined the ideal organization of sport and the patterns of sport policy which are prefered by these top athletes.
