Abstract
The Olympic phenomenon seems to be connected with a proliferation of symbols and signs, of which the circle and Torch are the best known aspects.
It would therefore be the proper thing to apply to the study of the sociological significance of the Olympic Games a method of analysis, inspired by the new semi otic sciences.
In the course of this analysis eight interdependent semiotic systems have been discovered. First we embark on their description, after which their properties are being studied and their mutual relations, and finally an attempt is made to interpret the ultimate object of their functioning regarding the significance to which they make their contribution.
