This article concerns the radio broadcast as mediated sports event. In particular, it has to do with the ways in which meaning is constructed in ball by ball cricket commentary in the BBC broadcast Test Match Special (TMS). Its central concerns are: the extent to which the live radio broadcast can be considered a narrative; how does TMS narratively construct the Test match; and what is the relationship between this construction and the discourses which frame meaning? The analysis offered in the article centres on the TMS commentary of the final Test match between England and Australia in the 2009 Ashes series.
