Abstract
Background
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted nursing education around the world and has created numerous challenges for students and faculty. Thus, there was an urgent need to address the challenges posed by COVID-19 due to shifts in the mode of teaching in nursing education in Kerala.
Purpose
A qualitative study was designed to explore the barriers and challenges of online teaching in nursing education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods
The study was carried out in one Government Nursing College and Nursing School and one private Nursing School of Kerala. Three focus group discussions (FGD) among students, one among faculty comprising six members and four in-depth interviews among students were conducted. Malayalam recordings were transcribed, translated, and analysed with thematic analysis.
Results
Eight themes emerged: Perspective on online teaching, practical expertise, technical glitch, kinship shifts, academic dishonesty, economic pain, peril, and faculty role strain.
Conclusion/Implications for Practice
Challenges and barriers of online learning in nursing education has to be effectively tackled through adequate preparation and safeguards. Nursing students and faculty require proactive, sustained institutional and personal support build resilience and tackle the barriers in online education.
