Abstract
The ultimate objective of any organization is to be effective in doing what they are doing. Organizational Effectiveness IOE) is a multidimensional construct. It has been attempted in this paper to understand the meaning of organizational effectiveness and study the models and frameworks pertaining to the same. Further, the paper compiles from review of literature, the key measures (surrogates) of OE in the contexts of select domains like institutes of higher education, research institutes, construction companies and durable goods manufacturing companies. Similarly, the factors affecting OE, as studied by select researchers have been touched upon for the sectors mentioned. It is observed that the measures and factors studied by researchers vary considerably for assessments of OE in different sectors. One of the thrusts of the paper is that in principle, these measures and factors cannot be fixed for all assessments of OE. The domain characteristics invariably need to be factored in for defining OE contextually. The diverse meanings of the construct, owing to its versatility ought not to be termed as disarray in theory. In the end, measures of and factors affecting OE are arrived at on the basis of review of literature and interviews of 21 experts in the field. These measures and factors are spun into a framework, which is presented here for assessment of OE in food processing enterprises.
