Abstract
Historians have begun to examine French colonial Indochina with a newly critical eye. Improved access to archives in France, and easier access to archival materials and schol arly thought in Cambodia, Laos and especially Vietnam have resulted in a new attention to France's 'model' or 'golden' colony'. 2 Scholars have started to apply to Indochina's history the critical thinking found in the growing literature that concerns the impact of technology and science on culture and society in colonial settings. 3 This article is situated at the inter section of these trends.
