Abstract
Voluntary organizations (VOs) have a distinct value system. Literature from the Western context points to accountability, sociability, equality, lack of hierarchy and shared decision-making as core values shaping VOs. The objective of this study is to identify values driving VO in India. Through a case study approach, the authors found values such as selfless service (seva), inclusion and respectful communication as core to the functioning. The findings reveal that values inspire employees of VOs to carry out their jobs effectively when the trustees put their beliefs into practice by taking action. This builds trust among employees. This argument discusses a value cycle, which includes values inspiring motivation, values inspiring action, and trust being established as a value.
