Abstract
Despite being a serious reproductive health issue for women, the sensitivity of the topic coupled with the difficulty of obtaining any information has resulted in very few qualitative studies on 'induced abortion'. This paper is based on a study conducted by interviewing abortion seekers in Delhi. The various reasons for a woman's decision to undergo abortion; the association of these reasons with socio-economic charac teristics, gestation and decision making; incidence of repeated abortions; and level of knowledge of contraception and contraceptive history of the abortion seeker have been investigated. The paper emphasises the importance of correct knowledge about contraceptive methods to avert unintended pregnancies and, consequently, abortions.
