Abstract
An increasing number of protocols submitted to LRECs contain a statement, on the information sheets for potential participants, to the effect that the research has obtained ethical approval. Whilst it may be considered desirable to inform potential participants that the proposed research has been subjected to independent scrutiny and obtained approval there has been some debate about what patients might infer from the inclusion of a such a statement. This is of particular concern if they are encouraged to believe that the research is safe and are thus influenced, in an unacceptable manner, to agree to take part. This paper reports on the results of research which sought to ascertain the possible effects of statements of LREC approval on potential participants in clinical trials, and the views of LRECs on the issue.
