Abstract
Medicine and medical science attract a degree of media coverage much greater than other professions or other branches of science. In many instances the media play a large role in forming public and political opinion. The paper introduces some of the debates around the role of the media in the presentation of medicine and science. It seeks to show that public and media fascination with medicine is far from new and that determining how a responsible media should respond to medical and scientific developments is far from easy.
