Abstract
This paper attempts to piece together a preliminary understanding of the organization of Filipino migrant workers in Hong Kong. It is argued that the relationships, foci of cohesion, and lines of division established by migrants, and the institutions to which they give rise (predominantly the associations), are used to create an image of a community. Frequently it is an image that is unidimensional and static, but it is one which may alter according to circumstances and objectives; for individuals and the relationships and institutions they establish are multidimensional and may be used to present many different understandings of that community. The relevance of these ideas to the analysis of immigrant communities in other parts of the world (including the Overseas Chinese in South East Asia) and even to the analysis of a generalized society are then considered.
