Abstract
An example is given of the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to predict the flow of molten polymer in one channel within an annular coextrusion die used for the manufacture of orientated polypropylene packaging film. The flow of polymer in the ‘as-designed’ channel geometry is compared with the flow when the geometry is modified to simulate what could be actual machining or assembly imperfections. The results give a quantitative measure of the effect of such defects on the circumferential uniformity of the extrudate and provide guidance regarding design changes needed for the further improvement in the quality of the finished film.
