Theoretical Research on Ultimate Bearing Capacity of Pier Strengthened Using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer

Abstract

Eccentric compression is one of the major reasons that cause the damage on piers of bridge construction. Making use of the prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) to strengthen bridge pier by winding it at a radial direction can give full play to the high strength and high performance of CFRP. As a result, the radial strain of concrete has been greatly constrained and the ultimate bearing capacity of bridge pier has been improved to a large extent. In this paper, the stress state of short column which is strengthened by prestressed CFRP has been analyzed theoretically under the situation of eccentric compression. According to the elastic-plastic theory, the calculation formulas of ultimate bearing capacity of short column strengthened by CFRP have been deduced under eccentric compression. The short column has a circular cross section and is made of reinforced concrete. The failure phenomena and failure mechanism of short column have been minutely analyzed, and the application of the calculation formulas has also been discussed in detail. Further more, consistency has been acquired after comparing this analytical solution with the numerical solution of finite element method (FEM). Therefore, these calculation formulas are not only reasonable and reliable but also have some application value for practical engineering.
