2 In actuality, during the post-Mao period, especially since the Tiananmen Square tragedy in 1989, Beijing has increasingly argued that the CCP's one-party reign is justified by the reality that the party is the only well-organized controlling force in China that will guarantee the nation's unification, stability, and orderly development. All of this indicates that the Beijing leadership is well aware of the potential for crisis.
