Reviews the changes taking place in the library and information profes sion in South Africa as a result of the social and political changes taking place in the country as a whole and considers the degree to which the pro fession is considering its role as an agent of positive change. Argues that the provision of information in this context should be aimed at neighbor hood and communities with the cen tral idea that the public library should provide community information which is relevant and supportive of the democratic process in South Africa. Considers what is needed in a community information service in post-apartheid South Africa.
