This has been a decade of develop ment for dictionaries of English, culminating in the publication of the Oxford English dictionary 2nd edition. Lexicography itself has emerged as a distinct profession. The dominance of the Concise Oxford dictionary in the single-vol ume dictionary market has been strongly challenged. The monolin gual learners' dictionary has made great strides, drawing on recent lin guistic research. After a slow start, computerization is now wide spread. The OED 2nd edition is not a full revision but an integration of the 1st edition and the Supplement, with some updating. It is now in database form and an interim CD- ROM has been published. Enhancements are planned.
