Abstract
This study sets out the basic facts necessary for an understanding of the current problems, trends and tensions in French library and information manpower. It reports on the various types of library and information service in France; on the levels of work within them; on career structures and promotion chances; on the education and qualifications tied into those structures; and on the government's role in maintaining or changing them. A list of abbreviations used, with brief explanations, is appended.
