Two recently published documents giving recommended standards for college library service are reviewed and compared with special reference to their origins (one produced by the Library Association, one by a lecturers' trade union), and to the actual provision made in UK college libraries as revealed by recent statistics. The importance and function of such standards are briefly discussed.
