Abstract
Personnel in special libraries and information units are characterized in terms of professional qualifications, job requirements, change, patterns of work and organizational communication. The data were gathered by the Sheffield Manpower Project. 251 individuals from 88 special units contributed data to the investigation.

The Sheffield Manpower Project was "an investigation of the manpower requirements for library/information work, specifying characteristics of the required personnel. The research was concerned with devising a methodology for analysis and classification of jobs and personnel." The research team was based at the Postgraduate School of Librarianship and Information Science, University of Sheffield, and led by Mr R. Sergean, an occupational psychologist. The project was funded by the British Library Research and Development Department.
