Abstract
Discusses some of the factors leading to an increase in the output of urban documentation and suggests reasons why local government is becoming more conscious of its need for information. Types and sources of urban information are reviewed and related to the roles and functions of local government as a statutory body, as a provider of services and as a servant of the public. Concludes with a brief assessment of the performance of urban documentation as a method of communication between the various components of local government and indicates some of the areas where improvement is needed.
