Abstract
The nature of "information science" as allied to the arts of librarianship, but entering a new phase, particularly because of the development of computers. But technology should not be allowed to dictate objectives and procedures; the study of users and their needs, and the social role of information transfer, should be given more emphasis in curricula in order to avoid over-emphasis on techniques at the expense of services.
