Abstract
Sale Catalogues of British Government publications first appeared in 1836, and are im portant because the publications listed are almost totally excluded from other bibliographies until very recent years. The article comments on the importance of the publications and on their subject range, and estimates their number since 1836 at about half a million. No single library appears to have a complete set of the annual cumulative catalogues, and the article therefore describes the make-up and coverage of such a set based on a collation of the sets in the British Museum and the Department of Trade and Industry Library, which between them have copies of all known catalogues. A detailed bibliography of a complete set is given, including full information on all indexes. Attention is drawn to the importance of the post- 1945 catalogues in giving the most comprehensive listing available of the sale documents of many international agencies. A reprint of the complete set of catalogues is announced.
