Abstract
The article discusses present attitudes and practices in Britain, studying official recommenda tions and the solutions adopted by several universities concerned with the problem. Special duplicate funds established by some university libraries are discussed and the role of the students' book grants is considered, together with methods of assessment for the extent of duplication. A voucher scheme for students' book grants is recommended for the future.
