Abstract
The purpose of this study is to document the status of creative aging programs being implemented at the present time by libraries located throughout Egypt’s public library system through use of a quantitative methodology (descriptive-analytic) and an on-line questionnaire as the primary means of collecting data from library managers and information specialists working in 30 branch locations. Of 237 questionnaires distributed, 144 returned valid surveys, representing 60.75% of the target sample size. SPSS statistical software was used for analysis of the collected data. Results indicated that the library managers and information specialists in the study are very familiar with the concepts and goals of creative aging programs. In addition, they collectively rated the programs with an average level of success of 88.9%, which demonstrates a strong support of the creative aging programs. However, the study also found a need for professional training (52.8%), specifically in relation to providing service to senior citizens, and designing and implementing creative aging programs. Recommendations made by the study include: improving the continuing education and professional development opportunities available to library staff so they may be able to provide high-quality creative aging programs that are responsive to the needs of older adults and help to utilize their life experiences; increasing funding to allow for the continuation and expansion of creative aging programs across the Egyptian Public Library System.
