Abstract
This research paper investigates the impact of aesthetic elements on user engagement in libraries, focusing on libraries in the UAE. The study explores four key aesthetic constructs: visual appeal, comfort and functionality of furniture, ambience and atmosphere and signage and wayfinding aesthetics. Using a survey of 75 librarians, the study examines how these elements contribute to creating welcoming and inclusive library environments. The research identifies the significant role that aesthetic design plays in enhancing user experience, satisfaction and behaviour. The findings indicate that visually appealing interiors, comfortable and flexible furniture, a pleasant atmosphere and clear signage are essential components for fostering engagement. Statistical analysis through ANOVA tests and correlations tests further confirmed the significance of these factors in shaping users’ perceptions and behaviour. The paper concludes that aesthetic improvements in libraries have a direct impact on user satisfaction and engagement, and highlights the need for libraries, especially in resource-constrained environments, to prioritise these design elements to enhance the overall library experience and address the challenges such as budget and space constraints. However, it is extremely important to consider the functionality and usability of libraries while enhancing the aesthetic environment.
