Calculation of visibility levels in road lighting is more complex for solid objects than for plane targets, which are likely to give misleading information on the performance of an installation. In this paper, a method is described for calculating the luminance distribution over a solid spherical target and determining its visibility level. Experimental work already exists that demonstrates the validity of this calculation method and the benefits expected in future lighting designs.
