Abstract
The lumen method is the most popular design tool used for interior general lighting schemes due to its simplicity, economy, and ready availability of design data. This paper puts forward proposals for modifying the existing procedure to enable the designer firstly, to space the luminaires at an appropriate distance to overcome the anticipated effects of obstructions on illuminance uniformity and, secondly, to take account of the consequences of the likely light losses caused by obstructions. The significant variables affecting magnitude of light loss in obstructed interiors are identified and their relative importance established. The form of the data necessary for the designer is decribed and an example of the complete design process given.
