The Los Angeles Music Centre Opera Company's production of Tristan and Isolde in December 1987 began a new era in theatrical lighting design. The designer is no longer restricted by conventional lighting technology—(s)he has finally gained full control of the medium. However, this new-found freedom requires a greater discipline in the design process and a reappraisal of the criteria for lighting design development in the theatre of the future.
