Abstract
Analgesia is a popular subject for clinical research for several reasons. First, there are many patients who experience pain and therefore there is no shortage of clinical material. Secondly, there are many methods of pain relief to study, including a large number of drugs. Finally, most drugs act quickly, usually within 30-60 min, and have a relatively short action of 4-6 h, so that other treatments can be compared when the pain returns.
Clinical trials of analgesic drugs need three important ingredients: a model, an experimental design and a method of measurement.
