Abstract
Psychometric model-measurements have been used to investigate the visual contact between the interior of rooms and the exterior. This is considered to be the primary function of windows when using permanent supplementary artificial lighting (PSALI). For the psychological dimensions: enclosure and restraint, privacy, and distraction by the exterior; the influence of illuminance of PSALI, of window width and of the environment seen outside could be proved. Particularly because of the feeling of enclosure and restraint, windowless working spaces and narrow vision windows were rejected. With two windows, a width of 1.5 m to 2 m and an illuminance of about 400 lx to 1200 lx were found to be the optimum.
